Gateway Primary School

Students at the Gateway Primary School in the City of Westminster are loving their new library, which is part of a brand new wing built for extra form entry. Demco worked with the school and Nick Fuller at Westminster Schools Library Service to create a ÔÇÿnon-classroom like’ library for this beacon school.ÔÇ£One of our aims was that we didn’t want it to look like a classroom. We wanted a library to inspire reading. We have a 50:50 fiction to non fiction mix – complimenting curriculum and interests was very importantÔÇØ Nick Fuller, Westminster Schools Library Service.

What we did:

Started with workshops to look at the architects’ vision for the library and discussed ideas for the new spacePresented designs and layouts based on feedback from the workshops which included architects, Nick Fuller at SLA, the Gateway School head and deputy head and an ex-librarian Governor of the School

Took into account the need to create a flexible library space to accommodate different activities and requirements

Produced library designs to meet the objective to create a library that didn’t feel like a classroom

Invited the library team to visit the Demco showroom to help with colour matching and choosing furniture until everything was just right

How we did it:

Used Junior Promo shelving with integrated benching and end-of-bay displays

Created a central modular seating area with built cushion seating and browser boxes to encourage students to lounge and read

Made the best use of wall space with single-sided shelving against the long stretch of wall

Designed central double-sided shelving bays with integrated seating and display shelf options

Designed the library shelving layouts around the large wall space area and allowed light to flow in from the feature window wall

Included a small pod counter (MiMi choice) that fits snugly into the library space and with soft curved edges that encourages students to participate in issuing books and do their own helping out

Accessorised shelving with funky fun furniture, Boron sofas and Pebble stools in bright colours

Incorporated junior sized study tables and chairs that are strong, yet stylish and modern

The outcome:

Created a library to encourage reading and participation in library activities. Probably best described in the words of one of the school librarians: ÔÇ£they love it, they can’t get enough of it – boys and girls – they get so excited coming inÔÇØ
