Dartford Library marked its centenary year with a £650,000 restoration celebrating its heritage and historic roots. Kent County Council agreed a refurbishment proposal for the 100 year old Carnegie building after a six-week consultation showed huge support for it to reflect the heritage and past glories of the building.
Demco Interiors worked closely with the library team to design and furnish an interior that paid homage to the tradition of this lovely old building and its listed features.
The existing listed bookshelves were refurbished, while Demco designed and manufactured new shelving, with an oak finish and grey shelves, to match. Throughout accent colours in purple and teal take influence from the beautiful existing stained glass details of the ceiling, windows and doors, that are such a feature of this wonderful building.
The childrenÔÇÖs area features DemcoÔÇÖs bright and vibrant Mimi furnishings and carries on the colourways of the stained glass, translated into a bold, bright child relevant space. Adopting the same theme as the main areas, but adding a twist for different zones, maintains the ÔÇÿstoryÔÇÖ and gives a cohesive feel through the whole library.
The traditional look continues with leather look Chesterfield sofas and oak finish glass cabinets displaying archives and local history items. ItÔÇÖs lovely to see the details of the beautiful oak listed shelving with its metal latticed backs and brass handles and the care that has been taken to retain the stained glass, beautiful floor tiling and parquet flooring.┬á How easily this sits alongside the Scandi look of the childrenÔÇÖs area and the Mad Men styling of the 50ÔÇÖs chairs.
Demco Interiors also designed and furnished study and local history zones as well as rooms dedicated to Kent County Council’s ‘The Good Day programme’ which helps people in Kent with a learning disability.
Different times, different styles but harmoniously brought together. In the words of one Dartford resident and long time library user: ÔÇ£Dartford Library is a unique library and much cherished by all its usersÔÇØ.
