The new 847 m2 Mullingar Library for Westmeath County Council is located in the centre of the town as part of the new County Buildings complex on the 1st floor of the Civic Buildings.
It includes a dedicated teen area, a range of multimedia materials, a suite of 16 public computers, a new local studies department, an exhibition/events space for 50 people and admin offices for library staff.
The building was designed by Bucholz McEvoy Architects
Mullingar Library won an award in the ÔÇÿover Ôé¼20 million’ Category of the 2009 OPUS Architecture & Construction Awards.
The Judges saidÔÇª.ÔÇØThe drawings and photos submitted for this building did not do it justice. A site visit revealed a set of new and historic buildings interacting in an ingenious manner. The timber and glass atrium roof straddles various buildings, linking old and new in an engaging manner. The new complex is innovative, sustainable, modern and respectful of its historic setting. A credit to all involvedÔÇØ.
