SLA Design Award 2013 Finalists Announced
Demco Interiors has announced the finalists in the SLA  Library Design Award 2013.  They are (in alphabetical order):
- Comberton Village College, Cambridge
- Carterton Community College, Oxfordshire
- Wyndham Park InfantÔÇÖs School, Salisbury
This is the third year of the Award which aims to highlight the innovation, commitment, flair and foresight found in school libraries across the UK.  Supported by the School Library Association and sponsored by Demco Interiors,  the Award was created to set future standards for the recognition of excellence in school library design.
For the first time this year, a special commendation award has been introduced for a school library that while not entirely fulfilling the criteria of the main award, has impressed the judges with its magical quality and original thinking.
Scott Grant, General Manager Demco Interiors said: ÔÇ£This year we felt that we had to offer a special commendation to a library that inspired our judges to create this special category and, although not a traditional library design, has delivered something quite compelling.ÔÇØ
The three finalists were selected by a panel who judged all entries across a set of criteria:  inviting/improved library image; space planning; educational objectives; technology and engagement; consultation.
The judges were again impressed by the quality of the entries commenting: ÔÇ£It has been enlightening to see how schools and colleges have responded to changes and brought a whole new way of thinking to the library space.┬á The WOW factor is a phrase often applied to public libraries but can equally be applied to the school libraries we have visited.ÔÇØ
The winner will be announced at the School Libraries Celebration Day to be held at The Russell  Hotel, Russell Square, London, in October and finalists will share the stage with the Honour List of School Librarian of the Year Award.  Prizes to the winning school and runners up will be donated by Demco.
Tricia Adams, Director, SLA adds:┬á ÔÇ£At a time of challenge and change in schools itÔÇÖs fantastic to see such a range of innovative learning environments that stimulate students to work, and read, being nominated for this award.┬á We are delighted to continue working with Demco Interiors to support and encourage the development of innovative school libraries for the future.

Note to editors:
The SLA keenly supports the role of the school library as a place ‘to support reading and learning through the key stages and to foster a reading and information culture to promote independent, motivated readers and learners for life’.┬á As designers of school, academic and public libraries, Demco Interiors is committed to a renewed focus on┬áthe ÔÇÿschool library as placeÔÇÖ and is working with the School Library Association to support, encourage and promote school library design.
To highlight the innovation, commitment, flair and foresight found in school libraries across the UK and to set future standards for the recognition of excellence in school library design, we launched The SLA School Library Design Awards, supported by the SLA and sponsored by Demco Interiors and will be awarded to the school library that shows innovation, creativity and resourcefulness in its design.  What matters is not how big the school, school library or budget is, but what is achieved with available resources and the challenges that are faced.
