This is the second year of the Award which aims to highlight the innovation, commitment, flair and foresight found in school libraries across the UK. Supported by the School Library Association and sponsored by Demco Interiors, the Award was created to set future standards for the recognition of excellence in school library design.
The finalists were selected by a panel who judged all entries across a set of criteria: inviting/improved library image; space planning; educational objectives; technology and engagement; consultation.
The judges were impressed by the quality of the entries commenting: “This year has really changed my way of thinking about library design” and “Flexibility has been the key in many of the designs seen.”
The winner will be announced at the School Libraries Celebration Day to be held at a central London venue in October and finalists will share the stage with the Honour List of School Librarian of the Year Award. Prizes to the winning school and runners up will be donated by Demco.
Andy Parker, Director of Sales and Marketing, Demco Interiors said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the awards for another year. Submissions for last year’s event were outstanding; the finalists surprised us all with their innovation, commitment and quality of the library designs. We will continue our support of school libraries, because good library design is at the very heart of our business and school libraries, no matter how small, are at the heart of every school.”
Tricia Adams, Director, SLA adds: At a time of challenge and change in schools it is fantastic to see such a range of innovation and creativity in making learning environments that stimulate students to work and read being nominated for this award. We are delighted to continue working with Demco Interiors to support and encourage the development of innovative school libraries for the future.
